Animals should be treated with the same level of respect as humans. Training and behavioural modification are not only about teaching the animal but are also about teaching and educating the animal’s human. The most important aspect regarding a relationship between an animal and their humans is the formation of a strong bond between them. Applying force to an animal during training and behaviour modification does not strengthen the bond between an animal and their human and impacts negatively on their relationship.
An animal who has a strong bond with their human will respond better to their human, as they are more willing to please and work with their human, rather than an animal who fears or has no bond with their human. I believe that consent does not only apply to humans but also needs to apply to animals and must always be considered during training and behavioural modification sessions.
