Clarity is a Gift: Safeguarding the Future of Those We Love

For millions of us, our pets are far more than animals. They are companions, protectors and integral members of our family. The bond we share, whether with a loyal dog, an independent cat, or a small companion offering quiet comfort, is emotional, enduring and deeply rewarding.

But with that bond comes a profound responsibility.

Caring for a pet extends well beyond the daily routine of food, shelter and exercise. As responsible guardians, we must consider the “what ifs.” We focus on preventative veterinary care and balanced nutrition to ensure their wellbeing today, but we often overlook the most difficult consideration: What happens to our pets if we are suddenly unable to care for them?

In the event of an unexpected illness, incapacity, or accident, our pets can be left vulnerable. Without clear instructions, friends and family are often left to guess about medical needs, dietary requirements or who should step in to take responsibility.

The Weight of Uncertainty

This feeling of uncertainty is something my own family knows all too well.

What started as a pre-exam getaway for a group of teenagers turned into the most traumatic event in our history. They were stocked with snacks, warm clothes and inside jokes, until a tragic accident on a dirt road changed everything.

One of those friends was a bright, 17-year-old girl. After the accident, she was airlifted to a Johannesburg hospital, but four days later, she was gone. In the wake of her passing, our family was left in a state of impossible choices. What would she have wanted? What were her wishes regarding organ donation or her final arrangements? We did the best we could, but the lack of clarity led to debate, blame and a burden of “what ifs” that made an already unbearable grief even heavier.

It wasn’t until four months later that we found her diary and her organ donor card. If only we had known. If only she had left a roadmap for those she left behind, we could have leaned on each other instead of wrestling with the unknown.

The Gift of Clarity

That tragedy became the foundation for I-want.live.

I-want.live is an online platform where you can document your personal wishes. Not just for your own legacy, but for the pets that depend on you entirely. It allows you to record care routines, veterinary contacts and dietary needs and to designate the trusted individuals who will step in to provide stability for your pet should the unexpected occur.

We learned the hard way that clarity is a gift. It is the difference between disruption and stability; it is the difference between guessing and knowing.

Whether it is for the sake of your family or the furry companions who look to you for everything, preparation is not just a practical chore, it is an act of love.

We invite you to start the process today. Protect your legacy, safeguard your pets and give your loved ones the peace of mind they deserve.
