A Little Dog, a Big Idea: How a Dog Inspired PetRX

Pet owners in South Africa may have options when it comes to where prescribed veterinary medicines are dispensed. PetRX is an online ordering platform connecting owners who already have a valid veterinary prescription with FirstCare Courier Pharmacy. The veterinarian remains responsible for examining the animal, making the diagnosis and prescribing treatment; the pharmacy provides another way of obtaining the prescribed medicine.

When attorney Brandon Irsigler questioned the cost of medication for his ageing dog, he uncovered a gap in the South African pet healthcare market. His determination to do something about it led to PetRX, an online platform helping pet owners save money on prescription medication.

Anyone who has loved an ageing pet knows the lengths we’ll go to keep them healthy and comfortable. We rearrange our routines, make countless trips to the vet and, more often than not, pay whatever it takes to ensure they receive the care they need. But for attorney Brandon Irsigler, a prescription for his beloved Dachshund-Jack Russell cross, Cosima, raised a question he couldn’t ignore.

Why was her medication so expensive?

Cosima had been prescribed oestrogen, a medicine that had been around for decades. Yet the price charged by his veterinarian seemed extraordinarily high. “The idea came when I realised I was being charged what I regarded as a ridiculous price for oestrogen for my aging female dog by my vet,” he recalls.

“Oestrogen has been synthesised for over 40 years and the vet price charged just didn’t make sense to me.” Rather than simply accepting the cost, Irsigler began investigating how veterinary medicines were priced and distributed in South Africa. What started as a personal frustration would eventually lead him far beyond his familiar world of commercial law and into the pharmaceutical industry.

The result was PetRX, an online platform designed to give South African pet owners access to discounted prescription medication through an established dispensing pharmacy.

And just weeks after its soft launch, the response has surprised even its founder.

The Cost of Caring

For many pet owners, veterinary expenses don’t end with an annual vaccination or the occasional emergency. Dogs and cats living with chronic conditions may need medication every day, sometimes for the rest of their lives. Whether it’s treatment for allergies, hormonal conditions or other illnesses, the cost can quickly add up.

Irsigler’s research led him to question the traditional model in which pet owners purchase prescribed medication directly from their veterinarians. He says some veterinary medicines are sold with mark-ups ranging from 40% to 120% and believes consumers should have access to more competitively priced alternatives.

It is true, veterinary practices also carry costs associated with purchasing, storing and dispensing medication, so price differences do not necessarily mean a practice is overcharging. Nevertheless, for pet owners managing ongoing treatment costs, comparing available options can make a meaningful difference.

His solution was to create a platform that allows owners to have their veterinary prescriptions dispensed by a pharmacy and delivered to their homes. According to Irsigler, PetRX can offer savings of between 30% and 60% on certain prescription medicines when compared with prices charged by veterinary practices.

One example is Apoquel, a prescription treatment used to control allergic itching in dogs.

Anyone who has owned a dog with persistent skin allergies knows how distressing the condition can be. The scratching, licking and discomfort can become relentless and effective treatment is often essential.

Irsigler says Apoquel for medium-sized dogs typically costs between R29 and R31 per tablet when purchased from a vet. Through PetRX, he says, the identical medication costs R22 per tablet. For a dog prescribed two tablets daily, that could represent a saving of approximately R420 to R540 over a 30-day month, based on those prices.

It is important to remember that the comparison is based on the same medication and strength. Actual savings will depend on the quantity prescribed and any applicable delivery charges.

For owners managing long-term conditions, even relatively small differences in the price of each tablet can make a meaningful difference to their household budgets.

“The biggest benefit is cost reduction,” Irsigler explains.

How PetRX Works

The concept is relatively straightforward. Pet owners still visit their veterinarian for an examination, diagnosis and prescription. But instead of necessarily purchasing the prescribed medication from the practice, they can submit their prescription through PetRX’s ordering process.

Prescriptions can be sent electronically via WhatsApp or email, although certain highly scheduled medicines require an original physical prescription. The dispensing pharmacy is responsible for verifying prescriptions and ensuring that the relevant requirements for each scheduled medication are met.

PetRX itself does not dispense the medication. It operates as an online marketing and ordering platform, connecting customers with FirstCare Courier Pharmacy, which handles the prescriptions, payments, dispensing and delivery.

How does PetRX work

“All orders are placed with a courier pharmacy, using PetRX simply as a platform. All payments and prescriptions are sent directly to them,” Irsigler explains.

The pharmacy partner has been delivering time-sensitive human medication across South Africa for approximately 15 years. That experience proved invaluable when establishing the new service. Rather than developing a pharmaceutical distribution network from scratch, Irsigler could work with an operation that already had dispensing and courier systems in place.

He says customers can generally expect delivery within 24 to 48 hours, depending on prescription processing and courier arrangements. The service is available nationally, with customers already placing orders from different parts of South Africa.

For pet owners managing a chronic condition, the practical takeaway is that it may be worth comparing the cost of prescribed medication through different authorised suppliers. Their veterinarian remains responsible for diagnosing the condition and recommending appropriate treatment, while a dispensing pharmacy may offer another option for obtaining the prescribed medicine.

Breaking into an Established Industry

Although the idea was simple, making it happen was anything but.

Irsigler is an attorney specialising in general commercial transactions, particularly in the mining and energy sectors. Veterinary pharmaceuticals were unfamiliar territory. His legal background helped him navigate the legislation governing the supply of prescription medication, but understanding how to structure the business lawfully took considerable research.

“The biggest step was actually wading through the various legislation and regulation to make sure the offering was lawful!” he says. “As a lawyer I had a slight advantage but it took time and research and making sure our model aligned fully with the laws. All of this had to be done on weekends and late at night, as my existing clients needs had to come first. This made dealing with my IT and pharmacy team difficult, but we soon adapted.”

Then came an unexpected obstacle: finding a supplier willing to work with the dispensing pharmacy. According to Irsigler, almost every supplier he approached rejected the proposal.

“As PetRX is a revolutionary pet dispensing process, almost all suppliers rejected our application,” he explains.

Eventually, one supplier agreed to engage with the team, taking the time to understand the relationship between PetRX, the pharmacy and its customers. That breakthrough allowed the business to move forward. But the challenges weren’t over.

There was still a website to build, products to list, prices to align and ordering systems to integrate with the pharmacy’s existing operations. For someone accustomed to legal contracts rather than online retail technology, it was another steep learning curve.

“The IT side was a learning curve, but we had fantastic IT support personnel,” Irsigler says.

He admits there were moments when the project felt overwhelming. “This project and business was so far out of my comfort zone it was at times challenging to keep going, but I felt strongly that pet owners deserved to be charged a fairer price for prescription pet medication.”

FirstCare Pharmacy and PetRX

An Unexpectedly Busy Beginning

When PetRX was ready to launch, Irsigler and his team deliberately kept things low-key. They wanted to make sure the website, dispensing systems and supplier arrangements worked smoothly before promoting the business more widely. After all, they were dealing with medication that animals might urgently need.

“We deliberately chose a soft-launch approach,” he explains.

“As pet lovers, none of us wanted to have an offering that delayed or disappointed pets in need of treatment.” But even without a marketing campaign, something unexpected happened. Orders started arriving. Pet owners were finding the website through Google searches and word of mouth and customers began placing orders from across the country.

“To our surprise and without any formal search engine registration or publicity of any sort, we started receiving orders from all over South Africa,” Irsigler says.

“The number of orders has surprised us.” The feedback has also been encouraging. Customers have sent thank-you emails and one even took the time to post a positive review on HelloPeter.

For Irsigler, communication with customers is an important part of the service, particularly when orders involve medication needed to manage an animal’s health. “We communicate with clients directly when necessary (as a good pharmacy should) and keep them updated at all times,” he says.

The positive response has given the team confidence that their model has potential beyond its initial launch.

What's Next for PetRX?

With the ordering and dispensing processes now established, Irsigler is preparing to expand the business. PetRX plans to introduce more products, including additional prescription veterinary medicines, medicated and specialist pet foods and carefully selected pet accessories.

The business has also sourced medicines on specific customer requests, even when those products were not initially listed on the website.

Having spent its first few weeks concentrating on getting the operation running smoothly, PetRX is now preparing to launch a more ambitious marketing campaign. Online advertising and specialist publications will form part of the strategy. But for Irsigler, the central message remains unchanged.

“Simply, you don’t need to pay the mark-up your vet is charging on prescription medication,” he says.

While prices and availability will vary, the emergence of another way to obtain prescribed pet medication gives owners an opportunity to compare costs without changing the treatment recommended by their veterinarian.

The Little Dog Who Started It All

Cosima the inspiration behind PetRX

Behind the business plans, legal research and pharmaceutical negotiations is a much more personal story.

Cosima. The little Dachshund-Jack Russell cross whose medication bill first made Irsigler question the price of veterinary medicines.

Sadly, Cosima has since passed away. Irsigler describes her as his dear pet, adding that he misses her every day. Although she never got to see the business she indirectly inspired, her legacy lives on in a venture that Irsigler hopes will help other pet owners afford the medication their animals need.

It’s a touching reminder that sometimes the biggest ideas begin with the smallest members of our families. And in Cosima’s case, a little dog left behind something that could make a difference to pets across South Africa.

Pet health note: Prescription medication should only be used under veterinary guidance. Your veterinarian remains responsible for diagnosing your pet and prescribing appropriate treatment. Prices, product availability and dispensing requirements may change.
